Easy way of planting large quantities of trees.
If you have a large quantity of trees to plant, you have got to think of a quicker method than just a spade. Especially when our land is clay based and at the moment it is unusually dry, and we cannot get a spade in.
This method using a hole borer / auger was picked up from out of a book called ‘Grapes (Crop Production Science in Horticulture)’ pub CABI and written by Creasy G and Creasy L.
They use this same method for planting grapes, the only drawback they highlight is planting out in heavy clay. And I quote.
In soils with a high clay content, the use of augers is not recommended due to possible glazing of the sides of the hole. This effectively creates a barrier to root growth beyond the hole created, leading to stunted vine growth. In other situations, however, this method is a good alternative to others.
