How small can you graft – Cleft Graft

Some varieties of trees only produce spindly small diameter scion wood, and very often you have a rootstock that is way to large in diameter, so what can you do ?.

You can do a cleft graft, as you would on a much larger growing tree.

Cleft Graft
Split the Rootstock with a sharp knife, watch your fingers.

Apply Parafilm or similar to the joint, if need be apply wax or sealer to any exposed wood (this needs some). This photo shows a double cleft graft, could be used with 2 different varieties of scion.
