Final Outcome – Pot grown Potatoes – June 2023

This is a final update on this years ‘Pot Grown New Potatoes’ and our original blog entry at https://www.gb-online.co.uk/gb-wordpress/pot-grown-potatoes-2023/

We started growing 4 chitted ‘Charlotte’ potatoes on 23rd April, in tubs, in the greenhouse. The advice was, that as soon as flowers appeared, then that was the time to harvest them.

Well – I think another month and lots more water would have been benificial to the crop size. There certainly was excessive foliage and leaves due to too much nitrogen.

The haulms had to be cut off, to get the tubs out of the greenhouse. At least they were lush and green. Not like the commericailly grown ones, that have the haulms chemically burnt off, before harvesting.

We achieved only 600grams of almost spotless new potatoes. So in all they took just over 7 weeks or 49 days. The text books say (First early potatoes take roughly 80 days after planting to mature and should be ready to start harvesting in mid-June). We were 30 days short of this target. We planted out on 23rd April, which should have been 12th July to harvest.

Maybe enough for a meal for 2 older people. Just a quick wash and they are ready.
