Walnut tree shoot problems in May
Every year in May/June this happens. The photos are explanatory.
The trees are about 20 years old and approx 40ft tall.
A sliver of the stem is actually removed and its always just where last years bud has grown into this years new growth. The nuts on the ends are not touched. This gives me the impression its an over wintering bug in the actual bud. Virtually every single stem is affected.
It would probably appear to be grubs within the branches and the likes of a woodpecker comes along and gets them out.
Need to get this sorted out.
