Ripe Fruits in UK – September 2025
It’s now coming to the end of the fruit for this year 2025. But there are still a few that are developing their ripeness and flavour.
This variety of apple called Zari. Produced in Belgium, 2008. Zari is the result of a cross between Elstar x Delbard Estivale. It is covered by Patents.

More of a traditional UK variety, called Merton Pride. Being raised in 1941 at the John Innes Horticultural Institute, Merton, London, UK, from a cross between Glou Morceau and Double Williams (a mutation of Williams Bon Chretien).
Very large fruit of the more traditional pear shape. The skin is almost yellow when ripe with large amounts of russetting in small patches all over. The flesh is very soft and very juicy flesh. Excellent flavour.

A very rare Asian Pear crossed with a European variety called Ooharabeni. Probably a cross of Okusankichi × Max Red Bartlett. Not managed to taste this one yet.

An apple called Rainbow. Being sold in the UK by Frank Matthews of Tenbury Wells. Will hopefully being tasting this variety very shortly. It is a late-harvest fruit with striking red skin and green and pink stripes. Snow-white, non-browning flesh – ideal for fresh salads and cooking. It is crisp, tart taste mellowing to a subtle sweetness from January to April in storage. Originated from Croatia. Also known as Eric’s RainbowTM.

A very nice looking apple variety called Blaze. Originated from Illinois, USA approx 1939. A cross between Collins and Fanny. Crisp and sweet, the flesh conveys a very nice, sprightly flavour. A nice looking apple variety.

Finally, one of this batch of ripe fruit is a plum named Topend Plus. A very late ripening variety, self-pollinating, resistant to frost. The fruit and the tree are very healthy, with the fruits being medium sized, oval to elongated. The skin is dark blue, almost black, with a noticeable frosting. The flesh is light yellow, firm, and the stone is very loose, juicy and excellent in taste. We are still harvesting them now, and we are heading towards the end of September. A tray of fruit gathered today, ready for eating fresh.
