Ripe Nuts in UK – September 2025

We have just past mid-September 2025, and our walnuts are starting to drop. This is very very early, almost 3 weeks early. I have never known it to be this early. It’s the first time we are gathering ripe nuts up from the ground. I think its going to be a long haul, as there is a bumper crop still hanging. We are, however, being warned of a frost tonight, which might make them all drop.

A nice photo just showing the Walnut variety Coble beginning to split and fall. This variety sometimes does not develop well, with blanks or dried out kernels. But because we did not have any late frost, they got off to good start.

Just a small collection, gathered in the early hours of the morning. The ones still with husks on are the ones being dropped from the canopy of the trees by our squirrels. They cannot be bothered to go get them, so they start eating another one nearby.

We thought we had better get the few Black Walnuts (Juglans Nigra) we have growing. If these fall on your head or on your car, they will make a nasty dent. They are not ripe yet, so we will leave them a few more weeks in the greenhouse to hopefully split.
