Ripe Fruits in UK – Late July 2025
It’s getting hard work now, keeping up with all the fruit that is getting ripe, and also getting up-to-date photos.
This variety of apricot is called Pisana. It is a quite large fruit 109 grams, that is orange all over, with a deep red blush on the sunny side. It is very fleshy and juicy, with a very sweet flavour. It has a semi-clinging stone. A must-have variety on my list, and it is in the top position.

One of the few Japanese plums we have retained. Most varieties, I believe, have insipid taste, many not sweet but more acidic, and are very, very firm, not soft. This variety, called “Obilnaja” is excellent, with a very sweet taste (no hint of acidity). Large and juicy with a clinging stone. The skin colour is yellow with a pink/red blush. This is top of my Japanese plum varieties list+.
The only problem is that Obilnaja is supposedly dark red/black skinned, so we have a problem. I initially thought it was an Early Golden Plum. But my belief is it’s a Siberian plum (Prunus x hybrid) KRYMSKAYA ROSA.
KRYMSKAYA ROSA translates from Russian as “Crimean Rose”.

A peach variety called Maira of Latvian origin, which is self-fertile and is exceptionally sweet and juicy. Typical peachy skin colour, with flesh that is yellow with a hint of green, almost heading to white. The stone is clinging. I apologise for the lack of photo quality, but the squirrels beat me to the best ones. The normal fruits are medium to large, but this was the last one on the tree and smallish.

How about another plum called “Ijulskaja Roza” that ripens mid-July? The flesh is pleasant and sweet, but on the small to medium size.

I think we are coming to the end of the early-season plums, with this one called “Skoroplodnaja”. A complex interspecific hybrid of myrobalan ( Prunus cerasifera ), Japanese plum ( Prunus salicina ), Siberian plum ( Prunus ussuriensis ), and Chinese plum (Prunus simonii). Registered in the Russian Federation in 1998. Valuable for its high frost resistance, very good taste, and resistance to fungal diseases.

We will finish off this batch of ripe fruit with an Asian Pear called “Man Sun Gil”. Again, the only problem is, is that this fruit is small and ripe now (21st July 2025) and the wasps are at them, whereas the official description is medium and ripe in September.
