Especially when our land is clay based and at the moment it is unusually dry, and we cannot get a spade in.<\/p>\n<p>This method using a hole borer \/ auger was picked up from out of a book called &#8216;Grapes (Crop Production Science in Horticulture)&#8217; pub CABI and written by Creasy G and Creasy L.<\/p>\n<p>They use this same method for planting grapes, the only drawback they highlight is planting out in heavy clay. And I quote.<\/p>\n<p><em>In soils with a high clay content, the use of augers is not recommended due to possible glazing of the sides of the hole. This effectively creates a barrier to root growth beyond the hole created, leading to stunted vine growth.
