Walnuts – Red Danube dropping 2 weeks early – 29th Sept
The Red Danube (Rode Donau) Walnut comes from southern Germany, the breed gets its name from the bright red-coloured nuclear membrane. The kernels are therefore commonly used in patisseries and chocolate factories.
It is a healthy breed and it is fertile, a pollinator is needed. The tree is medium growth rate and buds rather late, and therefore little affected by frost. Also called the “blood orange”.
This breed is quite rare and eagerly sought after.
