Walnut (Juglans Regia) – Red Danube
The Red Danube Walnut (syns Rouge de la Donan, Rode Donau) comes from southern Germany, the breed gets its name from the bright red-coloured nuclear membrane. The kernels are therefore commonly used in patisseries and chocolate factories. It is a healthy breed and it is fertile, a pollinator is needed. The tree is medium growth rate and buds rather late, and therefore little affected by frost. Also called the “blood orange”. This breed is quite rare and eagerly sought after.
These nuts are the first of this years crop, and are just starting 14th October 2014 to drop out of their husks.
