Unusual red coloured apple tree wood – Merylinn

Its not very often you come across something you have never seen before. But whilst doing some apple tree grafting this year, I thought I had come across some diseased wood, as it was red stained.

In looking into the variety known as “Merylinn”, I find that it is OK and normal.

The Merylinn or Red Merylinn as it is also known by, is a very rare apple, it is a weak grower, with the flowers being a deep red colour. The fruit and the flesh are also red coloured. The fruit is relatively sour/acid, good for cooking and cider making as it gives the  juice a pink colour. It is relatively disease free.
