Huxhams Cross Community Orchard – Dartington, Devon – October 2022
As part of our normal holiday in October time, we always like to include a community orchard.
Dartington, Devon is always a place we have passed through for years. Apart from visiting Martin Crawford at Agroforestry we have never visited any community orchards in the area.
There are 2 links relating to Huxhams Cross Community Orchard, that might be of interest Orchardlink.org and their Facebook page. Also a Orchard Communities Project in Devon
We visited on a lovely day in October, and were shown around by Daverick Leggett (community orchard volunteer). Its always nice to have a chat with like minded people.
A nice orchard layout, all planted out in groups similar fruits and nuts.

Huxhams Cross Orchard beliefs are
- enrich the life of our community through shared work in a shared space;
- provide an opportunity for healthy exercise and a harvest of organic fruits;
- enhance our local environment and wildlife habitats;
- learn and help our children learn to grow food sustainably for the future.
- provides delicious food for our community.
- provides a space for gatherings, celebrations and quiet contemplation.
- gives us an opportunity to work together and strengthen our interconnectedness.
- supports biodiversity and combats climate change

To aid in the community spirit, there is a covered area where activities take place. So no excuses for canceling events due to rain.

A very nice fruit circle or ‘hidden’ area had been planted out, and was coming into its maturity.A nice secluded seating area for informal meetings.

Some very nice sweet chestnuts were beginning to drop, I think there are 3 varieities.

Many thanks to Daverick Leggett (community orchard volunteer)
