Apple photographs for end August 2023
Columnar Apple (Malus domestica) OSTANKINO
A Russian columnar apple variety, that is one of the best disease resistant apple varieties. It is a medium sized sweet but sour, that mellows with age. Ready to harvest early September and stores for 3 months. The skin normally has a bloom on it, but when dusted off it shows an attractive bright red skin.

Columnar Apple (Malus domestica) DZIN
DZIN translates to Gin in English. It is a large Autumn variety, with dusty red fruits with a very good taste ripen at the beginning of September. Only stores for a short time, but it is disease resistant.

Apple (Malus domestica) Omont
Sometimes trees can get a bit mixed up. We have this variety that is just flowering, I do not think it will come to anything this year. We have no experience with this. But it is a French cider variety, raised by Monsieur Omont at Bourghteroulde, Normandy, France. Fruit does not store when ripe, and it produces an excellent cider.

Apple (Malus domestica) Rosanne
Rosanne is a nice looking apple, deep red colour with white lenticels coming from Tasmania, Australia. The deep red skin changing to a very very deep red almost purple/black. But it needs the heat of a hot summer, when it is harvested mid September. The flesh is soft, juicy, sometimes pink stained flesh with a perfumed flavour.

Apple (Malus domestica) Golden Hills
This variety is based up variety Greensleeves. Which is in itself a cross of James Grieve and Golden Delicious, which gives it a golden delicious look.
It was raised in 1979 by John Breach in Kent, England, from seeds provided by Hugh Ermen.
The fruit is medium sized, with a yellow skin and a faint pink blush on the sunny side. It is crisp, sweet and juicy.

Apple (Malus domestica) Glogerovka
This variety Glogerovka originates from Lithuania where it is called ‘Lithuanian Pippin’. It is crisp, and very juicy, with a sweet but sligtly acid flavour. Reputedly excellent as a dessert, cooking or cider apple. However the normal apple is more red over most of its skin, and is a pronounced green when out of the sun. I will have to keep an eye on this one to try to ascertain if it is the same.
