First Blackberry ripe 1st July 2020 – var Black Bute

This is one of the first ripening blackberries that I have found, and that truly tastes like the wild flavoured Blackberry, sweet with a slight acidic tone. Some of the new varieties have a not very nice after taste or they are quite acidic.

We started picking the first ones on 1st July 2020. They do not ripen all at once but have a nice ripening spread over the weeks. We grow a selection of varieties of Blackberry that grow up apple cordon support posts. So they grow in the open, and get blasted by the westerly rain and winds, and also the scorching heat during the summer.
